Brioche Knitting Made Easy

21/09/2025

At first glance, brioche knitting looks complex. But once you give it a try, you'll soon discover: with a little practice, you can create voluminous, elastic, and reversible fabrics that look simply stunning.

✨ What makes brioche so special?

Brioche stitch is characterized by deep, lofty stitches created by combining yarn overs with slipped stitches. The result is a fluffy, warm fabric that looks equally beautiful on both sides – perfect for scarves, hats, or cozy cardigans.

🧶 Tools and materials you'll need

  • Extras: Stitch markers to keep track of the beginning of the round.

  • Yarn: Smooth, medium-weight yarn is best for beginners – it makes it easier to see the stitches.

  • Needles: Circular needles are ideal, as they help distribute the weight of your project.

🪄 Brioche basics

The foundation of brioche knitting comes down to two key techniques:

  1. Yarn over + slip stitch: Slip a stitch together with a yarn over without knitting it.

  2. Brioche knit (brk): Knit the slipped stitch together with its yarn over as one stitch.

These two moves create the signature volume and elasticity of brioche fabric.

🧣 First project: A simple brioche loop scarf

Materials:

  • 2 skeins of smooth merino or cotton yarn (approx. 100 m / 50 g each)

  • Circular needles US 6–8 (4–5 mm), 24 in (60 cm) long

  • 1 stitch marker

Instructions:

  1. Cast on: Cast on 60 stitches loosely, join in the round, and place a stitch marker.

  2. Round 1: Slip 1 with yarn over, knit 1 – repeat to end.

  3. Round 2: Brioche knit (brk), slip 1 with yarn over – repeat to end.

  4. Repeat rounds 1 + 2 until the cowl measures about 10 in (25 cm).

  5. Bind off loosely to keep the edge elastic.

👉 Tip: Use two contrasting colors for a striking two-tone brioche effect.

❌ Avoiding common mistakes

  • Don't skip yarn overs – they are essential to the pattern's structure.

  • Use stitch markers to help maintain orientation.

  • Practice with a small swatch before starting your main project.

👍 My Conclusion:

Brioche knitting isn't difficult – it just takes a bit of patience to get the rhythm into your hands. After the first few rounds, you'll see the pattern bloom and the fabric grow soft and full of texture. A simple loop scarf is the perfect starter project that will leave you wanting more!
