Dyeing Yarn at Home – Yes, You Can (and Here's How!)

Have you ever thought about dyeing your own yarn? Sounds like a mad science experiment?
Don't worry – it can be natural, simple and super creative. In this post, I'll show you how to create your own colors at home using plants!
🌿 Why dye your own yarn?
You decide the colors and intensity
Sustainable, creative and natural
Unique yarns no one else has!
🪵 What you need:
White or undyed wool (natural fibers work best)
Plant material like onion skins, avocado pits, herbs, turmeric, red cabbage
Vinegar or alum (as mordant)
Pot, water, stove (not used for food afterward!)
🌟 Quick How-To:
Pre-treat the yarn (soak in vinegar or alum solution)
Make the dye bath (boil plant material & strain)
Add the yarn, gently heat (don't boil!)
Let it sit for 1–2 hours, cool down, rinse and dry
⚠️ Safety Note:
Use old pots & spoons, wear gloves and work in a well-ventilated area. Don't use kitchen tools for dyeing!
🤝 My tip:
Combine dyeing with pattern stitches for magical effects
Onion skins go from golden yellow to rusty red
Avocado pits create beautiful pink shades
