Mosaic Crochet Redefined

28/08/2025

Mosaic crochet may sound like something ancient, rooted in tradition – but this technique has made a real comeback in modern fiber arts. With clean lines, bold color contrasts, and surprisingly simple stitches, you can create projects that look stylish and contemporary.

🧩 What is Mosaic Crochet?

Mosaic crochet creates colorful patterns by combining single crochet stitches with extended double crochets (dropped into lower rows). It looks complex – but it's easier than you think. You only work with one color per row while the other rests. The result: two-color patterns with striking geometric effects.

✔ no complicated color changes
✔ suitable for advanced beginners
✔ endless design possibilities

  • Crochet hook size 3.5 mm (or suitable for yarn)

  • Scissors, tapestry needle

Abbreviations

  • ch = chain

  • sc = single crochet

  • dtr = double treble (worked into the row below)

Instructions

  1. Foundation row: With Color A, chain 25.

  2. Row 1 (Color A): 1 ch, work 24 sc. Turn.

  3. Row 2 (Color B): 1 ch, 3 sc, 1 dtr into the row below, repeat from * to *, end with sc. Turn.

  4. Row 3 (Color B): Work sc across. Turn.

  5. Row 4 (Color A): Pattern shifted: 1 sc, 1 dtr, 2 sc, repeat. Turn.
